The text editor par excellence for GNOME

Gedit is the text editor that comes included in the GNOME desktop. As such, it is offered as a free and open-source program.

This text editing application stands out, above all else, for its simplicity and ease of use. Like Notepad, its counterpart on Windows, Gedit does not add much in the way of decoration to its sparse interface.

This is not to suggest, however, that the program offers no more functionality than to allow the writing and saving of text files.

Without going into it too deeply, Gedit is a powerful programming tool that supports text highlighting for a number of programming languages like PHP, Javascript, HTML, C, Java or Python.

The program also provides some support for writing code, such as a line indicator, automatic indentation, adjustable margins, line highlighting, and colour themes for the text.

And as if that weren't enough, Gedit also offers extra features through its add-ons (plugins), of which a few are already included in the program, while others can be downloaded and added to the program easily.
